ScrapLove's Kickoff Crop!!

Who’s ready to CROP???

To start off our summer contest, we wanted to start it off with a bang…and what better way than time to crop, chat, and just have a great time?!!!

The kick-off crop will start at 3:00 pm PST Friday, July 11, and go through midnight PST on Saturday, July 12. All projects created must be original for the crop. Participation in the crop is not a requirement for the Summer of Scraplovin’ contest but we’d love to have you all join us! Come and go as you please and work at your own pace!

Please sign-up in this thread and keep your points tallied here. Make sure to list your name and then each of the challenges you complete (along with the 2 pts for each project).

How the points will work:
1) Each challenge will be worth 2 points.
2) Be sure to post the project/layout/card/etc. in the gallery & a link in the challenge’s thread.
3) Update your crop sign-in with the challenges you complete.
4) Make sure all projects/layouts/cards/etc. are posted by 3:00 pm PST on Sunday, July 13.
5) Sunday evening the tallies will be counted and the lovely with the most points at the end of the crop will win a $25 gift certificate to the Scraplove store!

"Isn't Fall Lovely" Layout Contest!!

We want to see some Fall Themed Layouts!! So dig out those photos you have been taking...pumpkin patch, Halloween, leaves changing, football games, anything and everything related to fall is included!

Create a 1 or 2 page layout that centers around the general theme of "fall". The layout must be new for this contest and must feature at SOME FORM OF STAMPING. This layout may be posted in any other online galleries, however we do ask that you note in your comments that the layout was created for the contest at ScrapLove!

All uploads must be entered into the Isn't Fall Lovely? gallery by midnight on November 15th. The winner will receive a 20 dollar ScrapLove gift certificate and will be announced by November 17th.

This month we feature Denise Hughes, who was a winner of our eight week "Summer of ScrapLovin' Challenge".

Here is a little about Denise in her own words:

Hi! My name is Denise Hughes. I’ve been scrapbooking for 7 years now. Scrapbooking is my favorite pass time. I find it very relaxing. My scrapbook style has really evolved over the past 2 years. Everything inspires me, whether it’s another LO in a gallery, an ad in a magazine, a competition, or just something outdoors!

I‘ve been a SAHM for the last 20 years and have only worked for a very short time outside of the home. I love photography. I recently got my degree in photography online. I love taking photos and altering them. My other passion is painting. I love to paint with acrylic. I owned an online Wholesale Co. for 2 years and sold floor clothes and painted items to stores all over the USA. It out grew what I could do by myself, and not sure if I wanted to take the next step, I closed up shop and walked away. I miss it sometimes, but scrapbooking feels that void.
I have a wonderful supportive husband, Charles, 5 children, and 1 sweet grand daughter, which are the subjects for most of my LOs. I’m a very proud mom of three children in the Army. My van shows it!

I’m very honored to be the October Lovely of the Month. There’s so much talent here. I’m looking forward to working with Suzanne, all the DT lovelies, and all the wonderful lovelies at Scrap Love!

I am so excited to introduce our September Lovely of the Month. You see her every day and not only is she a great person, she is an amazing scrapper! This month's lovely is.....

Here is a little about Michele in her own words:

Hi Lovelies! My name is Michele Elder. I was introduced to scrapbooking 10 years ago by Suzanne. I love to create layouts! It is a huge stress relief for me. I do it mostly for fun. My scrapbooking "style" has evolved. I used to be a very simple scrapper...with clean lines and computer journaling. Now I guess I am what Suzanne calls "Eclectic". I have never submitted any work to be published and NEVER been Guest DT for anything! This is a huge honor! I hope I can fill the shoes of all the greats that came before me!

In my real life I am a Pharmacist. I love my job but I work way too much. I have been married to my best friend Dave for 16 years. We are continually struggling to have children. We have two labs and one cat. They are family. I have a lot of nieces and nephews and friends with kids...so all the children in my layouts are family and friends. I am blessed to have them, and YOU...my friends at Scraplove!

Balanced and Eclectic: Achieving the Look for your Scrapbook Pages

Have you ever wondered how scrapbook artists can mix and meld patterns, colors embellishments and text styles with such ease and visual appeal? I have. And although I have always had the courage to combine elements on a scrapbook canvas, it was only recently that I actually thought about the process behind this style of paper crafting.

There are a number of ways this random, oddball eclectic look may be achieved, but I’ll discuss three simple methods that seem to have worked their way into my designer’s mental notebook. If you’re like me, you learn by example, rather than direct instruction. Read the three layout scenarios and see how I’d choose to end the tale of the scrapbook page “gone my way.”

Color Experimentation

I tend to like colors that coordinate with at least one of the colors in the photograph. I focus on the color that stands out most, and then choose its opposite on the color wheel.

Here is your scrapbook page: A picture of a child in a pink dress with a light blue background. Patterned paper selection is shades of pink with a floral pattern and a neutral cardstock choice.

Here is your scrapbook page on “oddball”: Same picture; same child, Patterned paper? Maybe not. I think I want to focus on the child in the dress. If I do decide to use patterned paper, I use it in small amounts. My cardstock choice might be pink’s darker cousin red’s opposite—green. And why be so girly with the green. Army green sounds like a goofy and rebellious choice.

Embellishment Variation

Here is your scrapbook page: A contemporary photograph brought to life with coordinating product line.

Here is your scrapbook page on “eclecticism”: A contemporary photograph with vintage-inspired embellishments. How about that picture spruced up with everyday office supplies for a futuristic look? Another popular option is to pick a period in time—60’s Mod, 80’s Punk, or even 20’s Flapper, and pick an item or two that remind you of that time. They key here is “mix it up.” Just because you have a current photo doesn’t mean you have to stick to current trends.

Shape Variation

My eyes usually gravitate toward a wide range of shapes. And while I like to see repetition of shape, something clicks in my brain and tells me to do the opposite of what would be considered normal.

Here is your scrapbook page: A square photograph with shapes reminiscent of triangles in the foreground.

Here is your scrapbook page on “random”: Let’s mix it up, shall we? How about rounded corners? Perhaps patterned paper where circles predominate? I like to see the variety that basic shapes offer. If your photograph features circles, try using paper and embellishments with triangle-like outlines, like stars and hearts. If you see lots of straight lines, add come curves using paint strokes, buttons, or flowers. It’s your world.

These are just a few ways to achieve visual balance and still have scrapbook page elements that are all over the place. With an a few fundamental concepts coupled with an open mind, the possibilities are endless.

I am truly honored to be able to design in the name of “love”—ScrapLove, that is! I’ve called myself a scrapbooker for about seven years, but took a sabbatical for about three, while “life” happened. I’ve been playing with paper for what seems like forever. My senior class in high school collectively decided that in ten years, I’d “most likely be found making a raincoat from old caramel wrappers” (seriously!).

My titles and the work they entail make me who I am today. I call myself a family-loving mom to a smiley baby girl, English teaching, God-fearing, astrology-loving paper crafter with a house full of show dogs and a perpetual pile of dirty clothes. In short, I scramble for time to relax and enjoy the simple things in life.

Nostalgic to a fault, I’m a “history-hugger” who uses photos as a way to pay homage to any number of cherished bygones. I’m an awful planner so I never know what’ll end up on a project. More often than not, it’s whatever I have within arm’s reach. I love color, and try to incorporate it in my work. My scrapbook style? Call it “colorful, homey funk” (Uh-oh, sounds like my dirty clothes.).

So here it is….the much anticipated, awesomely exciting, totally cool celebrity spotlight --- with the one, the only ELSIE FLANNIGAN!!! I want to start off saying Thank You so much Elsie! Your work continually inspires us and gives us that helpful little creative boast to help us spread out those scrapping supplies and get to work on our next creation!

Okay – here comes the fun part!!!

So Elsie, we all know you for your funky cool style, super stylin’ photography & super sweet personality so let’s start getting to know what makes you tick. What makes Elsie – Elsie?

Tell us about your family. I am really close to my parents and my siblings. My mother is a super cute art teacher who is originally from Venezuela. My dad loves to garden, he is really into orchids and his tomato plants right now. My younger sister is probably my best friend and just graduated college. And my little brother is getting ready for his senior year of high school. He’s our little rock star!

So say tonight you’re not scrapping – where would you be? Probably out eating sushi with my friends and playing mini golf!

You sit down at your favorite restaurant & order your favorite meal. Where are you & what are you having? I am eating sushi for sure!! There are a lot of places I like here in Springfield, MO. One of my favorites is Ocean Zen.

Name 3 places you'd rather be right now. On the beach in South America, at a rock concert (maybe arcade fire), or walking around New York City!!!

What’s your favorite movie? Amelie

What keeps you boppin’? Who’s in your ipod? I am currently listening to Death Cab for Cutie as I answer these questions

What personality trait/value do you want to be remembered for? Kind-hearted like my mother.

You’re tired & have worked all day – what do you do to relax & unwind? Maybe have a cocktail if I’m feeling cheeky or think up new ways to decorate my home.

We know you are the cutest thing & always are so bright and colorful – tell us where you shop. Forever 21. I love that store. I also love thrift shops and Urban Outfitters.

What's your dream vacation destination? I change my mind a lot but lately I have really been wanting to visit India again. There is just so much beautiful and fascinating culture to get lost in there. I would also love to visit Tokyo, Japan.

Are you an early bird or a night owl? Night owl all the way-that’s probably the time that I do my best work. I am the most creative in the evenings.

You’re thirsty & are needing a little snack – what do you grab? Junk or healthy stuff? Healthy stuff-don’t get me wrong I love to get treats as much as the next girl but I try and reserve the junk foods for when I am sharing with friends, like getting cherry dip cones with my sister at DQ!

What are some of your quirks? Pet Peeves? I think most people who know me well could say that I have a lot of quirks! And they would probably be right One thing I don’t mind sharing though is that I chew gum a lot and blow bubbles, its like a junior high girl really.

What do you drive? A red bug!!

Do you cook? Not really. My mother is an amazing cook so she taught me how when I was younger but I don’t really get the chance all that often. Every now and again I have friends over and I will cook for everyone or when I go over to Bar-B-Ques or picnics I take a dish. One of the last things I made was a peach cobbler.

What can you be bribed with? iTunes gift cards!!!!

I picture your house as the most colorful, organized, beautifully decorated place – what is it like? It is very colorful. I paint on my walls and like to add lots of personal details wherever I can. But it is NOT organized-that’s one area I do not have mastered at all yet

What talent would you like to have been born with? Ability to sing

What delights you? Finding a new band-that always makes my day!

Who is your hero? Gwen Stefani and my mom.

What’s your greatest fear? Bad things happening to my family or my dog

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment? I’d like to think that I haven’t done it yet.

So, how’d you start scrapbooking? I was really into art journaling and painting and one day I dropped into a local scrapbook store just to see what kind of stuff they had and I was hooked from that day on!

Do you remember your first layout? No-I probably should but I don’t!

We, here at Scraplove, are totally inspired by your work so it only seems fitting to ask --Where do you get your inspiration from? Do you have a process? I do a lot of different things. Some Los go through a very long process where I will set them aside and wont pick them up for weeks later, others happen in hours. And I get inspiration from tons of places: movies, music, magazines, and other scrappers!

Do you alter? What’s your favorite altered project? Altered books are my favorite to do.

How do you get out of a scrapbooking rut? I take a break from it.

Can you tell us anything about your new book? It is a totally different concept from my last book and it is on a topic that I haven’t really seen covered yet and it has an exciting twist to it that I cant wait to share!!

It is your job to come up with new innovative stuff in scrapbooking. Does that ever get scary? Yes!!! I am always a little bit afraid that people aren’t going to like my stuff. And I think there will always be that fear, at least a little bit.

If there was ONE paper line you couldn't live without (besides your own, of course) what would it be? Bam Pop!!!! I love them!!!!

What 3 scrapbook tools could you not live without? Japanese screw punch, a sewing kit, and my home printer.

Where do you see scrapbooking in five years? I think it will be very much the same because it is based on family and memories but I think it will continue to evolve along with the fashion and design industries.

What’s your schedule like? My schedule is very very full-which I am not for one minute complaining about! I love my job and feel very lucky and blessed to have it!!!

What bit of advice would you give scrappers? Do what you love and love what you do!!!!

Okay so this week's inspiration is a little backwards - not from an ad, layout, design, or anything to that effect - it comes from a photo I came across in my photo box.

As you can tell, this was a total unintentional, messed up photo. We had spent the afternoon playing at the park & I was taking way too many photos. But... it still got printed with all the others. Even though it's not a great pic, I wanted to scrap it anyways to portray what I feel about Dylan. You may want to take it as I have - a new look to scrapping something you normally would try to avoid (if you even planned to scrap at all) or you may be inspired in another way (park pics, close-ups, etc.). Just whatever it inspires in you - CREATE! Here's how the photo inspired my layout:

I'm really excited to be a guest member of the ScrapLove design team. Over the past few months, I've really enjoyed the great shopping, friendly people, and inspiring gallery that are part of ScrapLove.

Here's a little about me. . .

I've been scrapping since I was 18. My supplies started with enough colored cardstock, themed paper, edged scissors, and stencils to fill a Rubbermaid and have expanded into enough paper, ribbon, buttons, flowers, and other goodies to fill an entire room. I'm most certainly a supply junkie. I'm also an expert scrap-lifter--seems I get most of my ideas from my favorite LOs found in magazines or sites.

In my other life, I'm a literacy coach (working with middle school teachers to implement literacy into their classrooms). I'm also a wife (married to my cutie mail carrier husband for almost three years) and a mom to my spoiled-rotten black lab, Memphis. I guess I'd also like to think I'm a bit of an amateur chef--cupcakes and pasta dishes are my current cooking faves.

Let’s Party Shaker Card

This fun card is brought to us by our June/July Guest Lovely Tanisha Renee! :) Tanisha is on the DT for Zsiage and this card features those products.

Supplies:
Patterned Paper - Zsiage (The Jewelry Box- Bangles,To Be Or Not To Be?- The Question)
Cardstock - Worldwin (Treasures Royal Plum)
Chipboard Alphabet- Zsiage
Adhesive - Glue Arts, Thermoweb foam strips
Pen - Sakura
Ink, Stickles - Ranger
Brad - Making Memories
Mini beads
Star sequins
Glitter
Party Hat template - Microsoft Word
Transparency

Directions
1. Cut a 7 x 9 piece of cardstock, fold in half and score.
2. Cut a 4 ½ x 7 piece of the Bangles paper, ink the edges and adhere to the front of the card.
3. Use party hat template to cut party hat from Royal Plum cardstock.
4. Cut a smaller shape from the center of the party hat and ink all edges.
5. Apply adhesive to the back side of the party hat and adhere to transparency, trimming excess.
6. Cut four ½ x 6 ½ strips from The Question paper and attach to the top of the party hat with a brad.
7. Apply foam strips to the back side of the party hat making sure that the strips touch edge to edge. (Any gaps will cause shaker box material to fall out)
8. With strip side facing up, add glitter, mini beads, and sequins to the center and remove foam strips backing.
9. Take card and press on top of the party hat. (Shaker box in now complete)
10. Ink chipboard alpha by pressing on ink pad until desired coverage is achieved and allow to dry.
11. Cover inked alpha with stickles and allow to dry completely.
12. Repeat step 10 if desired, ensuring that each coat is completely dry.
13. Adhere alphas to the card.
14. Under the party hat, write “Let’s” and then trace with stickles.
15. Use stickles to draw designs on the party hat shaker box.

Summer of ScrapLovin' Challenge!!

We are having an 8-week “Summer of ScrapLovin” challenge here at ScrapLove.

Beginning July 15th, participants will compete in 8 weekly challenges for a chance to win great prizes and a chance at a one-month guest Design Team Lovely spot at ScrapLove.com. Winners will be chosen by the ScrapLove Team and a surprise guest judge and will be announced on Wednesday, September 12, 2007.

Each Sunday a new challenge will be posted and you will have approx. 6-7 days to complete the challenge and upload your page to our challenge gallery. All pages must be original and created specifically for this challenge. Challenge pages can be posted in other website galleries, by you MUST mention that it is part of the ScrapLove Challenge. Failure to do so will result in elimination from the contest.

To enter, you must be a registered member of ScrapLove.com, sign up in the official challenge participant thread and post one layout (of your choice) in the contest gallery by midnight (PST) on July 10th.

We must have a minimum of 20 people participating in order to begin the challenge. We reserve the right to cancel or change the contest if the participant requirement is not met. I am very excited to present to you this month's Guest Lovely, Tanisha aka: TanishaRenee! Check out her fantastic gallery to see some of great layouts and cards!

My name is Tanisha Long, I live in New Jersey with my husband Troy and our terrific 3 year old son Donovan. I work full-time as a Research Technologist and I also volunteer for the Community Emergency Response Team in my town. I started scrapbooking just after Donovan was born as a way to record his first year of life. The more I scrapped, the more passionate I became about this wonderful hobby. Scrapbooking allows me to record and preserve everyday occurrences in my family's life and it is a much needed creative outlet. I love to try lots of different techniques and I usually try to challenge myself to work outside of my box. Although I love pretty much everything scrap related, I have to say that my favorite products are patterned paper, chipboard, bling, and the alphabet in any form! I am a published scrapper; my work can be found in Memory Makers Magazine, Scrapbooks Etc., and Blue Media Idea Books. Hi everyone! My name is Rebecca and I have been a part of ScrapLove since September 2006. It is such a fun place to be and a great place to find some inspiration. I am the mom of two little boys, Andrew age 4 and Nicholas, who will be turning 2 in July. They are both very active and I often wonder how I make it through my days! I work from home as a Program Coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters. This allows me to stay home with the boys and set my own hours. Some days I wish that I was working outside the home, just to get a break. But in reality, I would want it no other way.

I have been scrapping for about four years. I started after Andrew was born but have really put a lot of time and effort into it over the past year. The best part about scrapping is being able to document all the good things (and bad things) that have happened in my life. I have used scrapping as "scrap therapy" a few times. It feels so much better to get it down on paper. I love scrapping the everyday moments in my life and hope that someday someone will appreciate it!

Create your own Felt flower embellies!

As you all know I am addicted to felt and it is just soo easy to make your own felt embellies! just grab some felt, embroidery thread, and a needle and you are on your way to creating some very personalized embellishments for your page. This project is soo versatile because you can pick the colors you would like to use to match your layout! All that you need to do is get some felt, lightly draw some flower shapes, or whatever shapes you would like onto the felt, cut them out and then sew on them to give them some pizazz!! Add some buttons to the center to add some personality, too! Soo inexpensive and soo creative! I have posted a couple of examples of flowers thatI have done on layouts! Hope to see you all trying this soon! If you have any questions, or just want some more advice, feel free to post the questions on Scraplove and I will try to help you out!!

Here’s a little about me! I’m Kate. I'm 26 years old and live in Missouri. I am a mom to 2 great kids – Kalli & Dylan - who are the main characters in all my scrapbooks. We have a kitty named Tigger. Here in Missouri, I work as a secretary in our public school.

I live in Maple Valley, WA (suburb or Seattle)and have been married for 18 years to a great DH who supports my scrapping addiction. I have three great children: Sierra (almost 12) Dylan (9) Alex (4) who don't complain too much when I'm ignoring them in order to work on photo and scrap related projects. I am a stay at home mom who also works from home hosting the Scrap Love site and running the Scrap Love store. I have been scrapbooking since 1995 and am addicted to all things scrapbook related. I love to attend scrapbook classes, conventions and CKU's. I also love to read scrapbook magazines and books and to take classes at BPS. My other hobbies are reading, traveling, watching my kids play sports and activities, organizing things and decorating my home. My goal for this year is to learn a lot more about digital scrapbooking and to finish all the scrap projects that I've started in the last year and not finished!
